The "Blueberry Guy" recently visited the Cosmetic Chemists meeting in New York City and sat through hours of lectures on conventional skin care, cosmetics and personal care products.   Then went next door to an exhibit of natural cosmetics or "cosmaceuticals" and was amazed.   Exhibits from around the world featured natural ingredients including blueberries, baobab and others.   Posters detailed research in far-off lands -- especially Asia which is the center of "cosmaceutical" sciences!  So -- it was off to Japan for the Cosme Tech Exposition 2016!   As you will see -- natural cosmetics, beauty-from-within are well established in Asia, and the trend is coming our way!

Phytochemical & Ethnobotanical Database.

Here is a wondrful source of information for those in search of functional food information:  The database was developed by Dr.James A. Duke, an American botanist known for his numerous publications on botanical medicine including the CRC Handbook of Medicinal Herbs.  He developed the Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Database for the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS)

New North American Blueberry Containing Cosmetics!

Check out the latest MINTEL report 2016 which shows rapid growth for blueberry use in natural cosmetics. Since January we have seen a huge leap since last year! (5 to 33 new blueberry cosmetic products!)


How big is the market?

Hard to say, some experts calculate around $80 billion in product value worldwide.  In the USA there may be around $20 billion.   One thing is for sure: Cosmaceuticals and Beauty from within are getting the attention of mainstream food processors and cosmetic manufacturers alike:


Cosmaceuticals = Cosmetics made with functional ingredients for topical application.


Beauty-from-within:  Food and beverage products formulated with ingredients which are associated with beauty, such as skin care, nails and hair.  



Celebrities endorse beauty beverages.  This one is made with gold!


Topical application features the "power of berries!"



Belly up to the "Gelato Bar" for some blueberry face crème!


Face masks for topical beauty applications are everywhere-- they include blueberry oils, essence and extracts.
